• Use value for clarity – Treat it as the foundation of the image and understand how it relates to composition.

• Design shapes for strength and readability – Work with a very specific, intentional set of shapes that make the image hold together.

• Make color work for the image – See color in relation to value so it supports the picture instead of distracting from it.

• Control edges with intention – Use edges to guide the viewer’s eye, create a dreamy atmosphere, and give the painting the feel of a traditional masterwork.
